June is used to starting over at new schools as her father's business forces her family to relocate often. She is also used to not getting terribly attached to anyone as she never knows when she will have to up and leave. When she literally runs into Wes one day in a convenience store, everything changes. In Wes she finds someone she doesn't ever want to leave and when the inevitable job change happens again, she knows nothing will be the same this time.

Written by a National Book Award winning author, The Big Crunch is a nice change of pace for a teen love story, as not everything is stereotypically perfect but the first love experienced by the two main characters is authentic and rings true. Making new friends, high school social dynamics, dating and first love are all central to this engaging story. Language is somewhat strong (cr-p, sh-t, b-tch, a-shole) and a wild teen party with drinking to the point of vomiting takes place. References to sex and to online porn are made, and though they consider going further, kissing and making out are as far as the two main characters go. Family dynamics and relationships between teens and parents are realistic ones.
