In this fourth installment of The Clique series, Massie's status as the expert on boys and fashion is threatened by Alicia's Spanish cousin, Nina, who is spending the semester at Octavian Country Day School. When Nina attracts the attention of the Briarwood School boys, the "Pretty Committee" declares war.

As usual, The Clique's characters are preoccupied with revenge-plotting, popularity, appearance, money, designer fashions, and losing their "lip virginity." Dylan, who is not heavy, is obsessed with losing weight. Nina, an eighth-grader, implies that she is not a virgin in order to impress the other girls. Not the best role model for being true to yourself, Nina also offers advice such as, "Guys love when girls are helpless."
