The Story
Wake—Book Review

Seventeen-year-old Janie gets pulled into other people’s dreams. Seeing things that are both frightening and upsetting, Janie is exhausted from the physical toll being taken on her body and the fact that she can’t tell anyone about her predicament. She befriends and falls in love with Cabel, who helps her navigate both her waking and dreaming life.
The Scoop
Wake—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

In this chilling and gripping novel, the main character’s mother is a severe alcoholic who is constantly drunk or passed out, leaving Janie to her own devices. Entirely to her own credit, Janie is extremely academically driven and responsible. There is drug use in this story, which also contains graphic child abuse. Specifically, a dream sequence describes one of the characters being set on fire by his father. Numerous nightmares are vividly depicted that are both disturbing and frightening. References to teen sex are pervasive as well. That said, Wake is a quick, engrossing read that is probably best for older teens.
