The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making—Book Review
Twelve-year-old September does not really feel like she fits in, and feels a bit adrift with her father far away in the war and her mother working in a factory all day. So when a gentleman named Green Wind and his leopard show up at her window to invite her to Fairyland, she goes without even so much as a wave goodbye. But ever since Queen Mallow was ousted by the villainous Marquess, Fairyland has not been the same. Now with the help of a library-loving dragon and a not-quite-human boy named Saturday, September will embark upon a quest to try to make things right in Fairyland once more.
The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making—Book Review
{spoiler alert}
This is a beautifully written story about a girl who embarks upon a wonderful, and sometimes treacherous, adventure and comes into her own along the way. At the beginning of the story, September wants desperately to have been chosen by Green Wind because she is special, even though she doesn't feel particularly special. Through her adventures in Fairyland, September does in fact become the extraordinary girl she longed to be--kind, capable, determined, and strong. While the vocabulary may present a bit of a challenge for readers on the younger end of the publisher's recommended age range (10-14), The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making would make a lovely read-aloud at home or in the classroom. >Book review trailer from YouTube:
