The Story
Envy—Book Review

The mysterious circumstances surrounding the death of Katelyn Berkley raise many questions in the small town of Port Gamble, Washington. Did she kill herself, was she murdered, or was her death an accident? Fifteen-year-old twins Hayley and Taylor are determined to get to the bottom of things, and they use their intuitive, psychic abilities to give them a glimpse into what was going on with Katelyn prior to her death. Secrets, lies, and hidden pasts surface as the twins investigate Katelyn's death, and everything comes to a head as they get closer and closer to uncovering the truth.
The Scoop
Envy—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

This first book in a new series, and this adult author's debut young adult novel, is a chilling and fun murder mystery. While fictional, Envy is loosely based on a real life suicide prompted by cyberstalking and cyberbullying. In an afterward, the author makes note of this, addresses the seriousness of these crimes, and provides a link to resources for readers. Fans of Pretty Little Liars will thoroughly enjoy this fast paced, suspenseful read. Dark humor and sarcasm are used skillfully and add greatly to this engaging story. Characters are unique and fascinating--a true-crime writer, a psychiatric nurse, twins with paranormal abilities, etc. Some typical teen behavior takes place--underage drinking, smoking, and language is somewhat strong (b-tching, cr-p, b-tch, a-s, p-ssed off). The teen that dies in the beginning of the story performed self-injury (cutting) and was being cyber bullied and threatened prior to her death. Some disturbing imagery is present--mostly during an autopsy--and this thriller has some creepy elements. Teens looking for a hip and sassy mystery will have a hard time putting Envy down, and will look forward to the next installment in the series.
