The Story
My Big Mouth: 10 Songs I Wrote That Almost Got Me Killed—Book Review

Davis Delaware is starting over in a new town, at a new school, in the middle of ninth grade. Okay, so maybe saying that he used to be in a band and that he plays guitar and that he writes songs was a bit of a stretch. But when he heard Molly (ah, Molly… sigh) say that it would be cool to start a band, he just couldn't seem to help himself. Now he has become the target of the biggest bully at school, he has to figure out how to play the guitar, and his English teacher has singled him out as a poet. Davis has a whole lot going on, and it all comes to a head when his band, The Amazing Dweebs, has to perform at the Rock Around the Dock.
The Scoop
My Big Mouth: 10 Songs I Wrote That Almost Got Me Killed—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

This fun, funny, and relatable story is written by the creator of Nickelodeon's CATDOG. Full of humorous graphic illustrations, My Big Mouth: 10 Songs I Wrote That Almost Got Me Killed will be enjoyed by even the most reluctant reader. Though the main character is in ninth grade, the audience for this book is much younger. Language is very mild (cr-p, t-rd faced, b-tt kisser, shut your piehole) and some mean name-calling from elementary school is referenced several times ("Urine Trouble", "Pee Boy"). Bullying is central to the storyline, with one main bully wielding a great deal of power over everyone in the school, and some juvenile fist fighting takes place. Main character Davis' mother has died prior to the start of the story, and both he and his father are grieving and adjusting to her absence. Characters have crushes on one another, and some kissing is involved. The song lyrics that Davis writes are all included and add greatly to the story. All in all, this is an engaging speed read with a great anti-bullying message that older tween boys will thoroughly enjoy.
