The Story
The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place Book 3: The Unseen Guest—Book Review

When Miss Penelope Lumley left the halls of the Swanburne Academy for Poor Bright Females to become governess at Ashton Place, she was quite surprised to find that her three students were recently found in the woods surrounding the estate, and had been raised by a pack of wolves. But the resolute Miss Lumley was more than up to the task. Undaunted by her challenging charges, she has spent close to a year immersing the children in poetry, Latin, geometry, architecture, and so much more. And she's even taught these former wolf pups to resist their urge to howl and chase small animals (most of the time). The unexpected arrival of the Widow Ashton, her new paramour, and their (missing) ostrich Bertha kicks off a new series of mysteries for the plucky young governess to puzzle through. After all, how were the children able to survive so long on their own? And why does Lord Ashton's mysterious illness seem to come and go with the full moon? It seems that these and more questions can only be answered with the help of an old friend and a midnight seance. But will Penelope find the answers she's been looking for beyond the veil?
The Scoop
The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place Book 3: The Unseen Guest—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

Set in Victorian England, The Unseen Guest is the third installment in a series about a plucky young nanny and her three challenging charges. Penelope is kind, patient, loving, and unflappable. She always has the children's best interests at heart, which is often not the case with Lord and Lady Ashton, who are hopelessly ineffectual as parents. In this installment, Penelope butts head with a villain who has set his sights on the Widow Ashton's fortune and is determined to exploit both animals and the Incorrigible children (who are a bit of a curiosity since they were raised by wolves). The story is told intelligently and with humor, and Penelope passes on many pearls of wisdom that she learned at the Swanburne Academy for Poor Bright Females. Since the humor is actually quite sophisticated, younger readers may get more out of the story if it's read aloud. While it is not essential to read The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place series in order, this book will likely be more enjoyable after reading the previous two.
