The Story
Lies Beneath—Book Review

The Disney version of mermaids couldn't be further from the truth. Calder White knows this better than anyone because he is a merman. He has spent the past five months resisting a merperson's natural urge to kill--to absorb all of the joy from a human's heart into his or her own. While Calder prefers to stalk his prey in the tropics, once each year he can't resist the pull of Lake Superior, where he reconnects with his three mermaid sisters. This year, the call comes early as Calder's sisters have finally located Jason Hancock, the man who must pay the ultimate price for their mother's death. A plan unfolds to coax Hancock onto the lake. The perfect predator, Calder uses his remarkable good looks and magnetic personality to get close to Hancock's older daughter Lily. The only problem is that Calder falls for Lily. Hard. With his loyalties divided, will Connor choose to collect on his own family's debt, or protect the family of the girl he loves?
The Scoop
Lies Beneath—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

Lies Beneath is a somewhat dark romantic fantasy that would appeal to fans of the Twilight series. Similarly, a teen girl is drawn to a monster and the two fall in love against all odds. This story, told from a merman's perspective, is an imaginative and compelling one, with an increasingly fast pace and even a surprise twist at the end. Connor is a killer who lives off the positive emotions of his prey. But after meeting Lily, a smart and strong female character, he has hope that he may not have to rely on others to supply his happiness. With just a bit of kissing and infrequent language (d-mnit, sh-t, a-shole), this book is also a good choice for tween girls who like to read ahead of their age.
