Drew is a basketball star. Only a junior in high school, he is already being compared to pros and is in the media spotlight. All of the attention he is showered with has him questioning motives, and everyone seems to want a piece of him. He stays true to his roots by going to the playground to shoot hoops alone late at night. The mysterious and incredibly talented older gentleman who frequents the playground as well may teach Drew a thing or two about what it is to be a legend.

Mike Lupica does it again, crafting a compelling and entertaining sports story that also has a meaningful message. True Legend will be enjoyed by young basketball fans, as there is the usual play-by-play action. The lesson main character Drew learns is not to believe his own hype, that there is much more to being a role model and a legend than your sports ability. The importance of strength of character and learning what it truly means to be a team player are important lessons imparted in this story. There are very brief references to drinking and drugs, and taking a very expensive car for a joyride ends in a minor accident and trouble with the law. Mike Lupica fans will not be disappointed in True Legend and will thoroughly enjoy this quick, quality read.
