The Little Woods is an intelligent and suspenseful murder mystery. Main character Cally struggles with the disappearance/death of her younger sister ten years prior. In fact, this is what leads her to switch schools her junior year and attend boarding school--her sister disappeared from Cally's new school's grounds. This story involving dead bodies, mysterious goings on in the woods, and many secrets, moves at a steady pace, and the story wraps up neatly at the end. Teens drink, smoke, chew tobacco, do drugs and engage in "hooking up." Cally loses her virginity in a rather casual encounter, and safe sex is practiced. Language is graphic and prevalent. For older teens, this story will be an intriguing and engaging one, for younger teens, it may not be entirely appropriate. Vocabulary is extremely sophisticated for a young adult book, and the writing is high caliber.
