The Story
What's Left of Me (The Hybrid Chronicles Book One)—Book Review

At first, there was nothing strange about Addie and Eva--two souls born into one body, sharing control of their movements. But there comes a point when children are supposed to settle, and the dominant soul takes over while the recessive soul fades away. Hybrid children are simply unacceptable. After all, hybrids are the cause of the war and destruction that consume the countries outside the Americas. So after years of worries, doctors, and tests, Addie finally settles at the age of twelve. Except that she hasn't, because Eva is still there. For the next three years, Addie and Eva pretend to be normal. But Eva is locked in a body she cannot control. So when they learn that there is a way to let Eva move again, they are terrified of being discovered, but they just have to try.
The Scoop
What's Left of Me (The Hybrid Chronicles Book One)—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

What's Left of Me is an intriguing and thought-provoking read. Its unique premise will draw the reader in from page one and the author convincingly creates two distinct characters in Addie and Eva, even though they share one body. Ethical questions abound as the reader considers what it would be like to be trapped in a body over which you have no control, and how parents are able to let their "recessive" child's soul go. Despite the risk of discovery and fear of losing control, Addie graciously allows Eva to share control of their body. As Eva literally finds her voice, she also evolves into someone who asserts her opinions and fights for what she believes is right. A romance blossoms between Eva and another hybrid boy, but it does not overwhelm the story. Social activism is a theme that will likely become more prominent in the next installment in the series. With one or two brief kisses and virtually no language (h-ll), What's Left of Me would also be a good choice for tween girls who like to read up.
