Back in 7th grade, Alison DiLaurentis is the queen bee of Rosewood Day, and there is not yet an "A" to harass the group via text. Ali has one huge secret that even her friends don't know and she is desperate to keep that secret buried and to keep up the facade of her perfect life.

Set years prior, before Ali's murder, Pretty Little Liars: Ali's Pretty Little Lies is a prelude to the Pretty Little Liars series. The cruel, manipulative, and ruthless behavior that runs throughout the series exists even back when the characters are in middle school. Secrets, deception, and lying abound, as usual. A sibling relationship is particularly toxic, and actually leads to one killing the other. Teens smoke, an eating disorder is alluded to and language is strong (bi-ch, d-mn, cr-ppy, sh-t, a-shole). Parents are neglectful, adultery takes place, and a mother slaps her daughter. Fans of this series will be interested to go back and see what leads up to Ali's murder, what the girls are like when they are younger, and what has led them to where they are in the current series.
