Fifteen-year-old Frankie returns to her exclusive prep school for sophomore year as a swan, hardly resembling the awkward, but whip-smart, girl she was before. She's the new girlfriend of a popular senior boy, but when she is excluded from his boys-only secret society, she becomes a self-titled "criminal mastermind" in order to turn the organization upside down and show that she cannot be underestimated.

Frankie is a very relatable female protagonist. She identifies herself mostly as smart, and only recently pretty. There are references to teen drinking (beer is at some parties) and sex (a main character implies that he is having it), but the physical interactions between Frankie and her boyfriend are limited to making out. Frankie does plan and implement several elaborate school pranks, in the tradition of college practical jokes. Readers may come away questioning the rigid traditions of old schools, and will appreciate Frankie's refusal to accept the satus quo without a fight.
