The Story
Four: A Divergent Collection—Book Review

Readers first encountered Tobias as "Four" in Divergent. His voice is an integral part of Allegiant. Readers will find more of this charismatic character's backstory told from his own perspective in Four: A Divergent Collection. When read together, these long narrative pieces illuminate the defining moments in Tobias's life. The first three pieces in this volume—"The Transfer," "The Initiate," and "The Son"—follow Tobias's transfer from Abnegation to Dauntless, his Dauntless initiation, and the first clues that a foul plan is brewing in the leadership of two factions. The fourth story, "The Traitor," runs parallel with the events of Divergent, giving readers a glimpse into the decisions of loyalty—and love—that Tobias makes in the weeks after he meets Tris Prior.
The Scoop
Four: A Divergent Collection—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

Fans of the dystopian trilogy, Divergent, will tear through this prequel collection of four stories featuring the beloved character from the series, Four. Four is immensely likable and readers will be gratified to learn his backstory. The first three short stories in the book focus on how Four got to be the person he is when he is first introduced in Divergent. The fourth takes place during the same time frame as Divergent, but from Four's perspective. Four is highly principled, introspective, fiercely loyal, and refuses to be anyone's pawn. Divergent fans will hang on his every word as he puzzles through ethical issues and decides what kind of man he wants to be. Characters drink alcohol, but otherwise this is an extremely innocuous read that would be an excellent choice for tween girls who read above their age level. Although technically a prequel, Four: A Divergent Collection would be best enjoyed after reading the Divergent trilogy.
