The Story
Gregor the Overlander (The Underland Chronicles, Book #1)—Book Review

When eleven-year-old Gregor follows his two-year-old sister, Boots, through a grate in their New York City apartment building's laundry room, they discover an amazing Underland world filled with giant talking cockroaches, bats, spiders, and rats. There lies the kingdom of Regalia, inhabited by pale-skinned, violet-eyed humans called Underlanders. Gregor's appearance sparks a war between the Underlanders and the rats, and he finds himself the reluctant subject of a strange prophecy. But when he learns that his missing father has been imprisoned by the rats for more than two years, Gregor embarks upon a dangerous quest to save his father and the Underlanders.
The Scoop
Gregor the Overlander (The Underland Chronicles, Book #1)—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

Exciting and age appropriate, the first installment of the Underlander Chronicles is perfect for the reluctant reader. There are a few sword battles but Gregor is unarmed and, at the end of the story, refuses his own sword because he dislikes violence. Gregor is an admirable character; demonstrating courage, making tough decisions under pressure, showing empathy for those who risk their lives to protect him, and taking care of his baby sister (complete with diaper changes) without complaint. If you have a sensitive reader, be aware that there are a few gory descriptions - rats falling to their death and bursting apart when they land on rocks, one giant spider feeding off of their dead spider friend. Adventure fans will be eager to read the next book in the series.
