The Story
A Mango-Shaped Space—Book Review

Thirteen-year-old Mia knows she is different because she sees letters and numbers as colors, but no one else knows. When difficulty in school forces her to tell her parents, her world gets turned upside down. Kids look at her differently, as does her very best friend in the world. When Mia finds that there is a name for her condition, synesthesia, a world is opened up to her that makes her feel less like a freak and that she has a place to belong.
The Scoop
A Mango-Shaped Space—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

A Mango Shaped Space is an age appropriate, worthwhile, eye-opening read that will be especially appreciated by those who feel different. Main character Mia has synesthesia -- sounds, letters and numbers have colors to her. The death of her grandfather and of her best friend’s mother, even though they have occurred prior to the start of the story, are important and poignant. The death of her beloved cat, Mango, is upsetting and difficult to read. This story provides excellent discussion material regarding acceptance, understanding, and figuring out who you are and what defines you.
