Penny has had her heart broken and is done with boys. She swears off dating, forms The Lonely Hearts Club, and is astonished by how many girls feel the same way and join. A multitude of good things arise from the club: camaraderie, empowerment, a wonderful support group, study groups, and unlikely friendships. Problems arise, however, when Penny finds herself having feelings for a boy – does she break the rules of the club, or follow her heart?
