The Story
Eleven—Book Review

On the eve of his eleventh birthday, Sam searches impatiently for gifts hidden in the attic of his building. There, he finds an article about the kidnapping of a small boy that triggers distant memories and makes Sam question who he really is and where he belongs. Sam, who has trouble reading, enlists the new girl at school to help him uncover more clues and piece together his hazy past.
The Scoop
Eleven—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

This is a beautifully written story about a boy who must find ways around his learning disability to embark upon a journey of self-discovery. Because Sam cannot read, he asks for the help of the new girl in is class, and is surprised to discover a supportive best friend. The new girl, Caroline, struggles with her family's transient lifestyle and soon has to move once again. Sam, whose parents died when he was very young, has a lovely network of supportive and loving adults, including his grandfather, two neighbors, and his resource teacher. He does lie about what he's been up to, but confesses to his grandfather in the end. While Sam had given up on learning to read, Caroline's move motivates him to try once again so that the two friends can communicate by email.
