With a pitching arm that is truly exceptional, Michael Arroyo hopes to take his team to the Little League World Series. Since the death of their father, Michael and his brother, Carlos, are trying to fly under the radar of Social Services so they can stay together, out of foster care and in the country. When Michael’s fantastic pitch raises eyebrows and he needs his birth certificate to prove his age, he and his brother need all the help they can get.

Beautifully written and age appropriate, Heat is a sports story for the ages. Weaving in the importance of family and the notion that family can come in surprising places, this story is heartwarming and charming. Parents should note that the boys are living alone and Carlos, the older brother, works several jobs to keep them afloat. Their elderly neighbor, who helps them keep their secret, looks after the boys. This story does involve lying and deceiving a Social Services worker.
