The Story
Chasing Brooklyn—Book Review

Brooklyn is mourning the loss of her boyfriend Lucca. When another friend, Gabe, dies of an overdose, her grief is compounded and Gabe starts to haunt her in her dreams. Lucca’s brother, Nico, is receiving messages from Lucca from beyond the grave, urging him to help Brooklyn. Nico and Brooklyn begin training for a triathlon together and through the process, they learn to lean on and trust one another as together they heal and make their way through their grief.
The Scoop
Chasing Brooklyn—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

Chasing Brooklyn is a hauntingly beautiful story of love, grief and healing. Upsetting nightmares are described in some detail and imagery is both disturbing and frightening. The presence of ghosts is important and characters must confront those that haunt them in order to move on. This story is written in free verse and chapters are told in alternating points of view. Death is central to this story as a car accident has claimed the life of one and a suspicious drug overdose takes another. Language is relatively mild (a-shole, a-s, sh-t). The two main characters work their way through a complicated relationship that leads them to falling in love with one another. A nice message is conveyed with regard to perseverance in overcoming adversity and working hard physically to achieve a goal. Writing is poetic and poignant, and numerous inspirational and moving snippets can be found in this story.
