The Story
Something Upstairs—Book Review

When Kenny moves from Los Angeles to Rhode Island, he discovers that his house is haunted by the ghost of a slave boy named Caleb. Caleb asks Kenny to travel with him back to the nineteenth century and prevent his murder from happening so he can finally pass on. Now it is up to Kenny to help Caleb by solving his murder. If he doesn't, Kenny will become trapped in the past -- forever.
The Scoop
Something Upstairs—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

This page turner from an award-winning author is part ghost story, part mystery, and part time-travel adventure. The story has some scenes that might be scary for the very sensitive reader -- there are gunshots and ghosts that appear in the middle of the night -- but it would be fine for your average fifth grader. It is a great choice for reluctant boy readers, book clubs, and reading aloud. Discussion could be had about how violence affects both Kenny and Caleb, and about the consequences of Kenny's eventual choice.
