Even though Trina is a nice, smart girl, she and her middle school friends have had it with Carlos, who is constantly scratching, talking to himself and disrupting class. The kids plan an elaborate prank to teach Carlos to shape up. But when Carlos is assigned to be Trina’s science partner and she gets to know him, she doesn’t feel right about the plan and needs to decide whether to stand up to her friends or betray Carlos.

Readers will be able to relate to this accurate portrayal of middle school. Although the exact nature of Carlos’ disability is never disclosed, it is clear that he is an outcast because of it. Trina is conflicted about the prank, but is unable to stand up to her friends in time to stop it. Her guilt and acceptance of her responsibility play out in a real-world ending that many kids will relate to.
