The Story
A Friendship for Today—Book Review

When Rosemary's "colored" school in Missouri is shut down because of the new desegregation laws in 1954, she must attend sixth grade with all of the white kids. Her best friend contracts polio before school starts, making Rosemary the only black kid in her class. To make matters worse, she is seated next to Grace, an awful girl from a racist family. However, the girls come to realize that as outcasts, they have more in common than they thought, and an unlikely friendship blossoms.
The Scoop
A Friendship for Today—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

This engaging read is the semi-biographical account of the author's own experience with desegregation in Missouri in the 1950's. Historically accurate but never dry, it is a timeless story about perseverance, friendship, and understanding that most girls will enjoy. Thoughtful discussions could be had with your child about racism, inner strength, and courage. Language includes "idiot" and the "N" word. There is a brief mention about a girl that had to get married because she was pregnant, and Rosemary's parents get divorced because her father had an extra-marital affair.
