In this third installment in the Uglies series, Tally has been turned into an agent for the dreaded Special Circumstances, an elite fighting machine designed to keep the Uglies down and the Pretties dumb. Her mission is to put down the New Smoke rebellion permanently. But Tally is bothered by a tiny place in her heart that almost remembers her preference for a different outcome. By the end of her journey, Tally ultimately seizes control of her own destiny and makes her mark on a new world where Uglies, Pretties, and Smokies can all live together.

Like Uglies and Pretties, this is an action-packed read. (Unfortunately, a good portion of this story could be lost on one who has not read the previous two books.) Throughout the series, most of Tally’s choices have been forced on her, but she finally makes a decision on her own, showing courage. This book contains “cutting” (using pain as a way to achieve mental clarity) and a death of an important character. On the positive side, even the hardest characters are ultimately able to experience their entire emotional range.
