Daniel True is invisible at his high school. No one even calls him by his real name. The fact that he is overweight has earned him the nickname "Mitch," short for Michelin Man. Mitch is a journalist, covering sports for his school paper, and even getting a few bylines in the local paper. Mitch is teamed up with photographer and overachiever Kimi, and the two of them become quite a team. When they uncover a scandal involving one of the varsity football players, their investigative journalism reaches new levels of danger and intrigue, and they are determined to get to the bottom of the story.

Payback Time is suspenseful, engaging and action-packed. The story focuses mostly on investigative journalism, but also has tons of play-by-play football coverage for sports enthusiasts. A mystery involving a transfer student is at the heart of the story. Gang activity and witnessing a murder has put one character in jeopardy, necessitating his relocation. Main characters Mitch and Kimi are put in numerous dangerous situations as a result of their involvement, including assault, fist fighting, threatening phone calls, and tire slashing. Language is mild (b-tch, fat t-rd, cr-p), and chaste kissing takes place. Mitch's sensible and healthy approach to weight loss leads to more self-esteem on his part, and his new-found friendship with partner Kimi is important and supportive. This page turner is a gripping read.
