The Story
The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)—Book Review

This first book in the series blends Greek mythology with contemporary action and adventure. Twelve-year-old Percy Jackson is a kid who can’t catch a break. He’s dyslexic, has ADHD, and has just been kicked out of his sixth school. But this is just the beginning of Percy’s troubles. Percy is sent to Camp Half-Blood, where he is shocked to learn that his best friend is a satyr, his favorite teacher is a centaur, and that he is the half-blood son of Poseidon. After Poseidon is accused of stealing his brother, Zeus’s master lightening bolt, Percy is sent on a dangerous quest to recover the stolen bolt and prevent a war that is brewing between the gods.
The Scoop
The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Book 1)—Book Review
{spoiler alert}

This is an exciting story that may even capture the attention of reluctant readers. Kids with ADHD or dyslexia might really enjoy the fact that these learning disabilities are very common among the half-blood kids in the story. There is some violent imagery used in action scenes that could be frightening to kids who are sensitive about monsters. While it seems that Percy’s mom is killed in front of him, it becomes clear that she survives. Also, it is implied that Percy’s stepfather has hit his mom in the past.

I am a girl and I loved this book. It is a popular page turner that both boys and girls would love. It is a great adventure series for kids from third grade to fifth grade. All my friends love it, and all the boys in my class read it over and over and over again.
